FileVan Help - Troubleshooting |
It's
surprising how many problems can be solved by simply rebooting.
You may be able
to save time by restarting your computer before proceeding.
Problems...
1) My ISP or email provider doesn't let me download the program
2) FileVan worked on my old PC, but not on my new
PC
3) I paid for the program but it says I have 0 trial minutes
left
4) It worked yesterday but not
today
5) The program shows incorrect available drive
space
6) I transferred a file but that
file doesn't work on the destination PC
7) Files are transferred very
slowly and are sometimes corrupt
Error Messages...
1) 8 C:\System~1 (or similar)
2) A device attached to the system is not functioning
3) Bad DLL Calling Convention
4) File Not Found
5) Illegal Function Call
6) Invalid Property Array Index

drivers
15) Application-defined or object-defined
error
Problems...
1) My ISP or email provider doesn't let me download the program
Some email
providers (such as HotMail) and some email programs (such as OutLook)
don't allow EXE file attachments. In those cases, you can ask us by email
for a link from which you can download the file.
up
2) FileVan worked on my old PC, but not on my new
PC
Is the file
transfer cable connected to a working parallel port? Other devices may use the
same type of connector, thereby looking like a parallel port.
Your new PC may require the latest version of FileVan.
Download the latest trial version (DOS, Windows)
or if a registered user, email us for the latest version at update@filevan.com.
up
3) I paid for the program but it says I have 0 trial minutes
left
You may have
downloaded the registered version (SetupF5R.Exe), but ran the trial version
(SetupF5T.Exe) instead. If you're not sure where you downloaded the registered
version, use your Start Menu's 'Find' function to search for 'SetupF5R.Exe'.
up
4) It worked yesterday but not
today
In most cases the
cable connector wiggled loose. In some cases, a system file wasn't released by a
program, in which case rebooting is necessary.
up
5) The program shows incorrect available drive
space
This applies to
FileVan For DOS which is a 16 bit program. Such programs report incorrect drive
space with drives of more than 2.1 GB.
up
6) I transferred a file but
that file doesn't work on the destination PC
When you try to
run that file in 'My Computer' or Explorer, a window appears asking 'Open
With?'. This means that the file type may have been registered on the
source PC but not on the destination PC. The application associated with that
file needs to be installed first. For example, the file 'MyFile.WRI' is normally
opened by Microsoft 'Write'. If 'Write' is not installed, then MyFile.WRI cannot
be run (viewed).
up
7) Files
are transferred very slowly and are sometimes corrupt
There are 2 categories of causes of slow or corrupt transfers...
a) Something is trying to 'talk' to the same parallel port being used for transfer.
b) Another program is running that hogs enough CPU cycles to allow our packet transfers to time out.
When either of the above happens, transferred data may not be received correctly, causing 'resending' to appear at the top-center of the main transfer screen. It will keep trying until successful. A lot of resending can cause slow transfer, timeouts and even corruption of transferred files.
As a test, press Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the task list. Shut down any programs you're sure you don't need. Many are placed there because they are in the 'Startup' folder, (Start>>Programs>>Startup). If shutting down programs allows file transfer without resending, then you can re-introduce the programs one at a time to find the culprit. A more thorough test is to select 'Run' from your Start Menu and type and run 'MSConfig'. On the Startup tab, disable (temporarily) everything except Systray, then press OK. Look especially for programs that have 'print' or 'spool' in their names. They may be using the same port that you're using for transfer. After rebooting, you can see if the problem is still there. Reintroducing one 'Startup' item at a time will tell you which program is interfering.
If the above fails to solve the problem, here's the complete list of causes found in our tech support data
base...
1) MS Office installs something called FindFast that constantly polls the hard drive and can interfere with transfer. If your hard drive light blinks every few seconds when you're doing nothing, FindFast is running. Remove it from the Startup folder and reboot.
2) Infrequent rebooting - Many programs have 'memory leaks' and Windows can get 'confused' - You should not go for days without rebooting.
3) Home-made cables.
4) Very old parallel port card - Older cards use TTL input/output voltage levels that are not compatible with newer cards. If you have a second parallel port, try that.
5) Old version of our program.
6) Other programs running.
7) Cable not firmly connected or bent or dirty pin.
8) Defective or intermittent cable.
9) Other devices connected to the same parallel port.
10) A software driver (frequently a scanner) that 'claims' the same port you're using to transfer.
11) Defective parallel port.
12) Automatic parallel port switch box. Not all models are compatible with our program. A good test is to bypass the switch box.
13) Normally, CMOS settings do not need to be changed. If none of the above fixes the problem, this may be worth trying - Enter CMOS (DEL during boot) and look for something like 'Parallel Port Mode'. It should be set to either 'Standard', 'Normal', 'Output Only', 'SPP' or 'AT'. Check for the correct setting on both PCs. If settings are correct, then it's something else in this list. On some PCs, printer port configuration programs are used instead of CMOS. Changing settings rarely affects your printer, but make a note of current settings before changing them just in case.

Error Messages...
1) 8 C:\System~1 (or similar)
This was a
debugging message used in an earlier version of FileVan. Download the latest
trial version (DOS, Windows)
or if a registered user, email us for the latest version at update@filevan.com.
up
2) A device attached to the system is not functioning
The installation file, SetupFxx.Exe was corrupted
during download. Please download again.
up
3) Bad DLL Calling Convention
This sometimes happens when updating FileVan. One of
our system files, FVan32.DLL, in the installation folder may still be opened
for access. Remove the file from the installed folder, typically C:\FileVan5.
Reboot and run SetupF5x.Exe again. If FVan32.DLL is not in the installed
folder, you are trying to 'update' with a program that is not the latest.
up
4) File Not Found
You very likely have an earlier version. Download the
latest trial version (DOS, Windows)
or if a registered user, email us for the latest version at update@filevan.com.
up
5) Illegal Function Call
That message plagued us in the earlier versions
(especially FileVan for DOS). It had to do with different ways of date
formatting in PCs outside the USA. Recent versions of FileVan do not have this
problem. Download the latest trial version (DOS, Windows)
or if a registered user, email us for the latest version at update@filevan.com.
up
6) Invalid Property Array Index
That message can happen if files are manually deleted
outside of FileVan. That is, after you've clicked on a folder name to show
it's files, if you delete one of those files with 'My Computer' or other means, a hole is left in the list and a
program reference to it generates that message. The solution is to relog
(right-mouse menu) if you've added or removed any files from outside of FileVan
during a FileVan session. Deleting files from within FileVan does not cause this
error.
up
7) Launch has caused an error
in...
You have an earlier version. Download the latest trial
version (DOS, Windows) or
if a registered user, email us for the latest version at update@filevan.com.
up
8) No CE Signature
The installation file, SetupFxx.Exe was corrupted
during download. Please download again.
up
9) Out of string space
or Overflow
This is fixed on FileVan 5. On previous versions
of FileVan For Windows, either of these messages may result if the sum of all
the file name characters in any single folder exceed 65,000. Registered users may
update to version 5 for free.
up
10) PKSFX executed an invalid instruction...
The installation file, SetupFxx.Exe was corrupted
during download. Please download again.
up
11) Sharing Violation
You are probably trying to delete a file that is in use
(usually by Windows). Reboot to release the file.
up
12) Sub or function not defined
Sometimes Windows gets confused. Rebooting
will clear that message.
up
13) This program has performed an illegal operation...
It's very likely that you have an earlier version.
Download the latest trial version (DOS, Windows)
or if a registered user, email us for the latest version at update@filevan.com.
up
14) Must sign on as Administrator to install FileVan
drivers.
You have signed on to Windows NT, 2000 or XP as a user
rather than as an Administrator. To install FileVan, you must sign on as
Administrator. If the PC is part of a network at work, you may need to ask
the System Administrator to install FileVan for you. If the Administrator
needs to know what FileVan does during install, the steps are listed here.
up
15)
Application-defined or object-defined error.
You have an early version of Windows 95 or 98.
Microsoft has an update that fixes that problem. It may be
downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/WURecommended/S_WUFeatured/Libraries/Default.asp.
Select "Windows Library Update" in the Service Packs section. Note where you are downloading the file (SPEU.Exe), then run the program.
